Sweet Reads

These are some of my favorite articles and books! When I have a free minute (Ha!) I love to read things that inspire me to become a better teacher and remember why I started teaching. Happy reading :)

Favorite Books:

-Among Schoolchildren by Tracy Kidder
Tells the story of a school teacher in Holyoke, Massachusetts and the unique troubles and   challenges she faces. LOVE this book- it inspired me to teach in the district I do now.
-Letters To A Young Teacher by Jonathan Kozol
Written about letters sent back and forth between a young teacher in an urban setting and a college professor. Discusses some of the challenges of the urban school systems.
-Other People's Children by Lisa Delpit
Discusses the differences in culture, upbringing, and speech of non-white students.
-Literacy Through Play by Gretchen Owocki
Geared towards younger grades- how to incorporate literacy instruction in appropriate and effective manners within the early elementary classroom.
-The Classroom Management Secret by Michael Linsin
This book, along with his many articles, describes how to simply and successfully put a classroom management plan in place. His plan is based on two principles: creating a space for children to want to be in and having unwavering accountability.
-The Growth Mindset Coach by Annie Brock and Heather Hundley
Gives tips and lesson plans for creating a classroom based on growth, not letter grades. The book is set up in chapters named after the months of the year depicting small lessons you can do each month to grow and develop the growth mindset in your classroom.
-How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character by Paul Tough
This book was a shock to me. I prepared for a book filled with tips and research about how to advance kids academically through instruction and techniques, but it was the complete opposite. This book focuses heavily on the well being of students and their stress levels and how that impacts their behavior and learning in the classroom. It goes a step further to connect that success with later overall life success and happiness. It provides stories and research to back how stress and PTSD affects children, especially in inner city, high crime school systems. It is amazingly captivating and relatable to all schools; we all encounter children with difficult backgrounds.

Some Great Articles:

-"Now Presenting" by Erik Palmer about teaching students to speak professionally and correctly because if we don't teach them.. who will?
